CARPENTERS EXPAND JURISDICTION AND TAKE NEW NAME

Effective August 1, 2002 the Western PA Regional Council of Carpenters (33 counties) and the Central PA Regional District Council of Carpenters (27 counties) merged to become the Greater Pennsylvania Regional Council of Carpenters. The Carpenters now cover 60 counties across PA and will keep their headquarters on Mansfield Ave. in Pittsburgh. The merger has no impact on current wages and labor agreements. PITT CM PROGRAM APPOINTS NEW DIRECTOR

Mr. Joseph Beck, V.P., The Shaw Group, is serving as Director of the University of Pittsburgh Construction Management Program. Beck is replacing Dr. John L. Richards, who decided to step down, but will continue teaching and assisting the Department in the placement of graduates. Professor Beck will support the continued growth of the program with the introduction of Green Construction courses. Since its inception, the CM program has graduated 60 students with a BS degree and 30 with a Masters Degree. The program currently has an enrollment of 70 graduate and undergraduate students.

AGC OFFERS LEADERSHIP IN CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP

The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) has developed a dynamic workshop to be held at the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas on October 26-29, 2002 to help participants discover their personal leadership style and apply the principles of leadership to work teams in the field and office. Participants will explore the difference between leadership and management and learn strategies for successfully leading members of their work teams. Attendance is open to all individuals in the construction industry who direct or influence other personnel to meet project or corporate goals. NELLO CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY

Congratulations to Nello Construction Company, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The firm was established in 1952 as Giulio Torriero Contracting and was incorporated in 1970 as Nello Construction Company.

AUTUMN ELECTRICAL SAFETY REMINDER

Contractors following CAP's Assured Equipment Grounding Conductor program are reminded that the next quarter's color beginning on October 1, 2002 is ORANGE. Contractors should change their tape from RED to ORANGE after checking for continuous ground and inspecting cords for damage. Contact the CAP office for more information on this valuable program.

AGC ANNOUNCES FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) opened its competition for the 2003 Scholarship Awards Program. Over $200,000 in new scholarship awards will be available for construction and civil engineering students in 2003 which includes the following:

Undergraduate scholarship competition for construction and civil engineering majors;
Graduate award competition for construction and civil engineering majors;
James Allhands Essay Contest for seniors in university construction or civil engineering programs. TOPIC: The Construction Company's Role in Improving Safety".

ENCOURAGE EMPLOYEES TO TAKE JOURNEYMAN TRAINING CLASSES

The Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee is offering over 30 courses this fall at the Neville Island Training Center to improve skills and techniques. Contractors are encouraged to emphasize the importance of continuing education and training to their employees. These classes provide an excellent opportunity for carpenters to upgrade their skills in areas such as scaffold training, solid surface installation and clean room construction.
