Chartered in 1965, the AIA-MBA Joint Committee provides a unique forum for architects and general contractors to meet and discuss existing conditions of the construction industry. As a result of this forum, the Joint Committee compiled and published a set of guidelines to reflect the best practices for procedures involving drawings and specifications, bidding, contract documents and administrative procedures during construction. Originally published in 1967, these guidelines of best practices have evolved over time, adapting to the industry as it has changed. Part of this evolution has included a name change of this resource. Referred to as the AIA-MBA Yellow Book of Recommended Construction Practices since its inception (due to the publication being packaged in a Yellow binder), in May of 2010 the Joint Committee renamed this resource to accurately reflect its content: The AIA-MBA Joint Committee Best Practices Guide. The Joint Committee is poised to continue investigating, researching and developing recommended and impartial best practices for the benefit of the Western Pennsylvania construction industry. The harmony in our region's construction industry can be achieved through the utilization of these best practices, as architects and contractors work together to improve the working conditions and keeping the industry efficient, which ultimately benefits the owner providing the greatest value for the construction dollar. The Joint Committee could not have achieved its respected status without the dedicated leaders that comprise this working group from both AIA Pittsburgh and Master Builders' Association.
